Welcome to H and H Feed! We’re “Valley Center’s Freshest Feed Store”! Wow!!! We've been open for over two and a half years now!! It hardly seems possible!
As most of you know we spent much of the 90’s going through the county to obtain a major use permit here on our property, so we could legally operate a feed store. With Valley Center’s moratorium on building and Valley Center's fierce planning board working against us, it was quite the feat! But in the end, the county decided on it’s own that the east end of Valley Center’s business district was the perfect place for a feed store and told the V.C. planning group that they really didn’t have a good argument why there shouldn’t be one out here! After all, that’s what Valley Center is all about! It was the first permit issued (yes, even before Napa) in the moratorium zone since the moratorium had been put in place! While we were going through the long drawn out and extremely difficult permit process, we got more and more involved with our growing herd of prized Bolivian llamas, which kept us busy as a family for many years, and has since become a Valley Center landmark. Needless to say, the heavy involvement with the llamas and our on-going deep commitment to the animals and family delayed us from opening our doors to the public.
While we weren’t open to the public, we supplied many alternative livestock owners with feed and supplies. We realized that there was a lack of “alternative livestock” (llama, alpaca, ostrich, emu, pot-bellied pig, camel, etc.) supplies readily available and since we had most of the above, we started bringing in specialty feeds and supplies for exotic and alternative livestock. Before we knew it we had built a fairly steady customer base that relied on us for their supplies and feed. So we’ve officially been a feed and supply store since about 1995, but it was by appointment only. We’re happy to announce we’re now open to the public and serve the needs of the entire livestock community!

They said it would revolutionize the way rabbits (actually all species of animlas) are fed. They weren't kidding!! We were given this supplement several weeks before the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Assn. Convention in Del Mar in November '09) Convention, but we didn't start using it until about 6 weeks before the big show. I guess you could say our bunnies were "guinea pigs" of sorts. Well, overwhelmed, pleased, stunned and set back by the results we saw, we couldn't wait for it's debut at the ARBA convention veterinary conference. Thirteen thousand rabbits from all over the U.S. and the world showed up at "convention". Sadly, many were off their feed due to the fragile nature of bunnis. Several people thought to come to the King booth and get a sample of the YQ. Well, it was so well recieved that we brought in a shipment the next day. We sold out in one hour! Kevin stopped writing receipts because his fingers were hurting! We personally saw huge changes within our herd of aging bunnies. We even consider that the "YQ" gave us back a few of our precious bunnies, especially our beloved Mason. He was aging quickly and age wasn't doing him any favors. He looked terrible and he had lost most of his hair, had chronic weepy eye and had lost his zest for life. Like so many of the aged bunnies had done in the past, even with treatment, he was slowly fading away. He is one of our pride and joys and it was killing us seeing him like this. We saw immediate on YQ and in six weeks we had him back! That's just one of our stories. Several bunnies in our aging herd are going gangbusters, acting and looking like younger bunnies. We had 18 retired seniors "convention ready" in the 6 short weeks we had them on it. Those bunnies went to convention and did great with several top 10's! Not bad for 5 and 6 year old bunnies!! Now we're hearing like stories from other people. It's now being formulated for ALL other species. Larry said I could even eat it!! I gave some to one of our imported Gypsy Horse mares that had developed a bad case of watery diarrhea. The diarrhea disappeared! We gave some to our precious 20 year old imported Bolivian llama, Echo, because it looked as though he was failing. His condition improved and he's doing well again!

Our King Story
One of the most exciting aspects of opening was that we were able to bring a long overdue new feed line into North San Diego County, the King Feed line. King has been a prominent feed line in central and northern California since the 1930’s, but has recently found it’s way to southern California, via Equine Affair in Pomona and through many people that have moved south. They are an extremely progressive company on the "cutting edge" of animal nutrition. They strive to continually improve their feed products and will put them up against ANY FEED for comparison!!
We discovered King when our daughter was showing her Holland Lop rabbits. We couldn’t find a superior feed that maintained the consistency and “locked formula” that the fragile Holland Lop rabbits require. We had heard about King and were able to get a sample. We liked it so much that we arranged for a truckload to be delivered here. Our rabbits just took off! Their flesh condition and coats improved and were outstanding, so much so, that our daughter took number one standings in the Nation and then went on to do it two more times and I might add...she broke ALL existing record before retiring her herd!!! Other people noticed too and had us order a “little more” each time. Knowing our feed store was going to need to bring in a “big gun” feed, we contacted the nutritionist at King Feed and asked him if he’d like to come down and introduce us to their full line of products. After 40 years in the livestock industry, I didn’t think he could impress me with his feed samples, talk, taste (yes, I taste the feed!), or ingredients. Well, was I blown away! I opened the bags of feed and immediately I could smell the difference. I started reading the ingredients and found that this was the feed we’d been looking for. They even have a feed specifically formulated for foundered horses and for miniature horses and ponies. What I didn’t realize was that there are many transplants form northern California out there with no where to get King feed until we showed up on King’s list of dealers. Needless to say, we had an immediate built-in customer base. Even our veterinarian uses King. We have in stock now, a full line of King feed, featuring superior quality Rabbit, Llama/Alpaca, Equine, Poultry, Livestock, and Small Animal feed (even for rats and guinea pigs!).
King also distributes Black Gold dog food, a high quality dog food that, once customers take it home to their dogs, they come back for more! Seriously...People travel from very far to pick up bags of this high quality dog food! We are finding out that Black Gold is easily tolerated by "touchy tummies". Our vet feeds the Kennel Blend to her champion show dogs. Kennel Blend is low in fat and has good protein to keep those champions in great shape! There are several different varieties of Black Gold. They even have a no corn ~ no soy formula. Black Gold is willing to go up against any of the upper end dog foods in regards to its quality. After selling Black Gold for a while now, the people that have switched off of another dog food, don't go back. They love the quality, the price and the RESULTS!
The people at King really care about the quality of their product and you can always call them if you have questions. I believe this is why they are becoming so successful in So Cal. People are much more educated about what their horses and livestock need and King satisfies even the most picky customers. They are there to serve, and they do! They don't just talk big...they put their money where their mouth is! I have spent several hours with Larry Uelk (King's nutritionist) discussing the special needs of various livestock and what a wealth of knowledge!! Stop throwing your money away on non-fixed formulas, rice hulls and ingredient levels that aren't documented on labels!
Okay... I'm sure your sick of hearing me on the "King" subject, but King Feed formulas are also "Fixed" or "Locked Formulas", meaning they don't change the formulas (ingredients) even if the ingredients go up in price or are hard to come by. They REMAIN THE SAME, Load after Load! This is why we stopped losing our fragile Holland Lops every time we got a new load of feed in.

I know that King is a hard act to follow, but we also carry and STRONGLY BELIEVE IN and HIGHLY RECOMMEND the long time and trusted favorite, Manna Pro, makers of the universal and still popular Calf-Manna. Although the 75 year old company doesn't really need an introduction, Manna Pro has knocked themselves out with a wonderful high quality variety of feed, supplements and supplies for horses, livestock and poultry. I guess you could say, they've re-invented themselves! Manna Pro also has the distinction of milling the Number One selling horse treats in America. If you were a Manna Pro fan and couldn’t find it here in town for a while, you might consider revisiting their quality products. We still use Calf-Manna on select animals. All of our valuable imported Gypsy Horses get a scoop of Manna Pro Sho-Glo on their daily feed for those "extra greasy" dapples. ABOUT US
Our focus with our feed store is to KEEP QUALIT UP and PRICES DOWN and make it easier for the working class to be able to afford to keep their pets and livestock without having to sacrifice the quality of feed. We’re concentrating on volume and trying to keep our profits at an absolute minimum. There isn’t a lot of mark up in the feed business (at least here) and we cut some “skinny” deals. We’re also fortunate enough to have very low overhead, so we can pass that along to our customers. Before our doors were even open, we would find people outside the gates in the morning, at noon and in the evening waiting to get a good deal on feed!
We feel like we can be of help with many questions since we have spent a lifetime raising a variety of livestock, both traditional and alternative species. It is our lifestyle and passion. We have been successful at it and have bred and campaigned top horses (at the National and Regional Levels). We have maintained the number 1 herd of Holland Lops in the world, and we've bred and shown some top dogs. We currently raise palomino AQHA Foundation horses and America's newest equine star, the fabulous Gypsy Horse and of course, after 25 years, we still maintain a top herd of prize winning Bolivian llamas with recently imported blood. Oops...almost forgot, we've also raised emus, ostrich, rheas and (yep!) Pot Bellied Pigs. We have always approached animal husbandry with a practical, compassionate and humane approach to ALL animals at ALL times. If we don't have the answer for your questions, we won't tell you we do. We will refer you to a professional who can help address your specific needs. We are here to serve you and we deeply appreciate your continued business and support. In turn we will keep our prices as low as possible and keep our services friendly :-)
To maintain quality control, we're family owned and operated with the exception of 1 or 2 outside helpers to help keep up with our "growth spurts"!! We try to keep "staff" at a minimum because when we have to keep alot of hired help in, it drives the costs up.

We know it’s not the greatest economy for so many of us, but people have to feed their animals and we’re going to give them the break they need to get through tough times.

MENTORING
We can offer advice on the keeping of most species of animals. We can even refer you to people that can help you with your particular breed/specie if we don't feel like we can be of optimum help. Many of the needs of livestock over the years are the same, while some trends change with newer, non-traditional species introduced as pets or livestock, like pot-bellied pigs, llamas, alpacas, emus, ferrets, camels, zebras, etc. Whatever animals or livestock you keep, we have a very strict, non-bending approach to their treatment. ALL animals shall be cared for in a humane and respectful manner whether it's feeding, handling, or housing. ALL animals deserve to be safe. ALL animals deserve to have a clean environment in order to be healthy. ALL ANIMALS DESERVE FRESH (not green and murky) WATER to quench their thirst and QUALITY FEED to enjoy and nurish them. They should also be offered ample room for exercise. It is also our strong belief that ALL animals deserve shelter/housing (especially bunnies) from rain, the heat and the cold. In the wild, horses can at least back up against an earthen berm or get under a tree when it's hot or pouring rain. All wool bearing animals MUST be sheared yearly. ALL large specie livestock including llamas, goats, sheep and alpacas should have a yearly tetanus vaccine, if nothing else. Tetanus is a 100% preventable disease. I can remember our vet, saying what a shame it would be to lose an animal from tetanus since tetanus is preventable at such an inexpensive cost. Not to mention, tetanus is a horrible way to die!
ALL BUNNIES SHOULD BE HOUSED INSIDE A BUILDING!! We have had people come in and tell us they lost their pet rabbit to heat, or the cold weather! Why in the *&%^ would you not take a bunny in during the day in the heat or the extreme cold. Boiling to death must be a "Hellish" way to die in agony. Even a few bunnies are easy to take in during the day. It's also simple to bring a few bunnies in during fires or cold weather. If you need help with this, just let us know. Our barns are air conditioned and heated, but we're pretty good at helping out with this! We've spent several summers in the past with lots of "house guests"! Chinchillas also require air conditioning in warm weather, so please, if you're going to keep these pets, be prepared to provide them the comfortable life they deserve. Afterall, they didn't ask to be here. :)
LAST, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY!! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS!!!!!!!
STOP Indiscriminate and Backyard Breeding! The animal shelters are FULL of abandoned, unloved and unwanted pets that are doomed to be euthanized. The SNAP program offers free and low cost spay and neutering programs. Look them up on-line. In the recent past, we have had so many people walk through our doors and tell us they have a litter with Parvo and have lost several puppies! Why!?
PLEASE...IF YOU ARE AN ANIMAL LOVER, DON'T BREED YOUR PETS!!
Last but not least...
Please, please, please don't breed your rabbits! Most rabbits go to homes that really don't understand how fragile they really are. They are placed in cages, behind garages and other inappropriate locations where they get forgotton by a busy or lazy family or caregiver. There, they starve and dehydrate or die from cold or heat. They are the animals that can't make noise to remind anyone that they are hungry, cold, too hot or dying.
We are FULL! We cannot rescue any more right now. Bunnies are very fragile and should ALWAYS be kept indoors and away from agressive pets and small children.
ABC Veterinary Hospital in San Marcos neuters male bunnies for a very reasonable price. You will want to make an appointment with Dr. Niechen or Dr. Martin. They don't just "do" bunnies, they know bunnies!
Remember, if you breed an animal, be prepared to be responsible for that animal for the rest of its life.
ALSO...If you don't rescue, don't breed!!
Please help stop animal abuse and indiscriminate, haphazard breeding. Please report any animal abuse to your local authorities.
